The average price of a home in the Petersburg-Hopewell area is about $120,000 and Prince George County has an average of $209,000. These are both lower than the state of Virginia at about $250,000. To rent an apartment, new residents can expect to spend about $850 for a one bedroom or $1,200 for a three bedroom.

Petersburg is a city of 32,400 located directly west of post. Chester, Colonial Heights, and Hopewell are also nearby and each have between 17,000-20,000 residents. These areas are slightly removed suburbs of Richmond which is about 30 minutes north of Fort Lee. An average commute from Petersburg to the fort should be under 15 minutes, with good traffic.

The Appomattox River runs through Petersburg and Colonial Heights out to the James River, on which the city of Hopewell is situated. Fort Lee on post housing is privatized under Fort Lee Hunt Companies, and applicants may be placed on a waiting list until appropriate space becomes available. There are 1,500 units available for the base population of 50,000. Housing units have 2 to 5 bedrooms, and equipped kitchens.
